📌 Stage 6 · Count, Shrink, and Reorder · Inventory & COGS · Holiday readiness · 30-40 min
Walk the whole model once, then take the workbook home
Learning goals
- Reconcile the model end to end against the check figures
- Turn the reorder flags and material layers into a buying and pouring plan
- Keep your own copy running with the downloadable workbooks
Concepts
The month in one pass
Read the model like an auditor, sheet by sheet. Materials: $1,329.90 bought in September, $738.00 on hand at latest cost, and $731.35 if you value the open FIFO layers at their own layer prices; the $6.65 gap is the gift boxes bought at $1.45 and now costing $1.52. Production: seven completed batches worth $1,518.75 of materials, one planned. Sales: 17 September orders, 161 units, $5,320.00 gross. FIFO COGS: $757.17 drawn oldest-first, including one split draw. Margins: $4,863.60 net, $4,106.43 gross profit, 84.4 percent. Counts: net shrink -$2.55. Reorder: three SKUs flagged.
The holiday plan the model argues for
Pour JG-01 (49), JG-03 (10), and JG-04 (11) this week; the cure clock is the binding constraint, not the wax. Check material coverage before committing: the suggested pours need about 40.5 lb of wax (24.5 + 5 + 11), and 67.5 lb is on hand, so this round is covered with roughly 27 lb to spare; scaling up for December means the next wax buy (10-day lead) belongs on this week's list, not next month's. Steer gift-set traffic toward Shopify, where an 8-point fee advantage compounds on the biggest baskets. And re-run this month's numbers in early November: the reorder sheet keys off September's daily rate, and holiday demand will blow past it.
💡 Tips:
- Every figure above is reproducible from the workbook. If a number ever disagrees, walk the chain: master data, journal rows, draw rows, summary.
Take it home
The completed-system view (Completed System in the sidebar) shows the full workbook with every formula live. The two downloadable workbooks carry the same structure: the case file to study, the blank template to start your own ledger, with formula columns pre-filled and guarded down to row 204.
The workbook is deliberately macro-free: plain .xlsx, no VBA, no security prompts, opening cleanly in Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc. Amounts exclude sales tax; confirm your state's rules with your Department of Revenue. This is a teaching model for a single operator, not accounting software or tax advice.
Practice
Final review (Sep 2026). The exercise opens on Reorder with every value in place; nothing to retype, everything to verify.
- Verify the P and L — On Margins, confirm the TOTAL row: 17 orders, 161 units, $4,863.60 net revenue, $757.17 FIFO COGS, $4,106.43 gross profit, 84.4 percent.
- Verify the balance sheet side — On Materials, on-hand value is $738.00 at latest cost; on Purchases, open layers total $731.35 at layer cost. On SKUs, on hand reads 47 / 64 / 17 / 13 / 13.
- Verify the plan — On Reorder, JG-01, JG-03, and JG-04 flag Reorder now with suggested makes of 49, 10, and 11. Confirm the two material layers that need a buy soon: wax (67.5 lb left) and gift boxes (215 left against set demand).
- Open the completed system — Click Completed System in the sidebar to browse all twelve sheets live, then download the case and template workbooks from the final card.
Online exercise
The spreadsheet below is editable — follow the practice steps right on this page. Steps that need ribbon menus should be done in your own Excel with the downloadable practice file.
